Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund dynamischer, schnelllebiger Unternehmensumwelten und der ihnen inhärenten, sinkenden Halbwertzeit von Ressourcen und Kernkompetenzen sowie den durch sie erzielten Wettbewerbsvorteilen, wird als Defizit der ressourcenorientierten Sichtweise immer wieder auf die weitestgehend fehlende Berücksichtigung dynamischer Aspekte verwiesen. In jüngerer Vergangenheit wird die Frage nach den Ursachen intra-industrieller Wettbewerbsvorteile vermehrt durch die unterschiedliche Unternehmensausstattung mit flexiblen Problemlösungsarchitekturen erklärt. „As advantages become increasingly temporary managers are shifting their emphasis from seeking unassailable static advantage to build organizations that continually seek new sources of advantage. Understanding the key sources of advantage and how they are sustained and eroded thus has become more crucial than ever in formulating competitive strategies.“
