More than twenty years ago, Peter Kraljic wrote: “Purchasing must become supply management” (1983, p. 109). However, even today many companies have not come beyond early phases of this transformation from a purely tactical purchasing to strategic supply management (Jahns 2005, pp. 115–144). This research project will try to explain why so many companies face difficulties on this journey—and how those companies could speed up the evolution process to improve their performance output.
