Lange Jahre war der Bereich des Dienstleistungsmarketing eine Art Rand- oder Unterdisziplin des Marketing. Immer wieder wurden theoretische Versuche unternommen, Dienstleistungen von Produkten abzugrenzen, die daraus folgenden Konsequenzen für das Marketing abzuleiten sowie die Relevanz des Dienstleistungsmarketing zu betonen (z.B. Sasser 1976; Shostack 1977; Meyer 1983; Engelhardt/Kleinaltenkamp/Reckenfelderbäumer 1995; Lovelock/Gummesson 2004). Mit dem im Jahre 2004 im Journal of Marketing erschienenen und hochgelobten Beitrag „Evolving to a New Dominant Logic for Marketing“ scheint nun der Damm gebrochen: Die Autoren Vargo und Lusch stellen dar, dass sich Unternehmen in der heutigen Zeit einer neuen dominanten Logik stellen müssen: Nicht — wie bisher vorherrschend propagiert — die Produktion und der Verkauf von Gütern schafft den zentralen ökonomischen Wert eines Unternehmens, sondern seine Fähigkeiten, Dienstleistungen zu entwickeln und anzubieten. „In a service-centered view, tangible goods serve as appliances for service provision rather than ends in themselves“ (Vargo/Lusch 2004, S. 13).
