This section will briefly discuss the assignment of the antecedents to organic and mechanistic structures (Burns & Stalker 1961)84 and boundary management activities (Ancona & Caldwell 1992a, Weinkauf et al. 2005, p. 100). Organic structures are represented by decentralized decisionmaking, participative-decision-making processes within the team, central budgets and physical proximity. Mechanistic structures are represented by rewards, formalization and steering committees. Boundary management activities are represented by top management support and integration with functional departments.
