The stories metaphors tell - Metaphors as a tool to make sense of individual narratives

  • Chapter
Methoden in der Betriebswirtschaftslehre

Abstract

It is widely acknowledged that language plays a key role in the daily life of organizations (Brown et al. 2008) and that metaphors can be considered taken-for-granted components herein (Vaara 2005). Consequently, much has been written about functions and meanings of metaphors in general, and how they are rooted in the respective culture (e.g. Lakoff/Johnson 1980). However, research with a clear focus on the specificity of metaphor meaning has been fairly limited and only a few studies have been conducted about the use of metaphors in order to understand individual accounts.
