In den letzten Jahren ist den frühen Phasen der Produktentwicklung sowohl in der Praxis als auch in der Forschung erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden. Manager benennen die frühen Phasen häufig als größte Schwäche im Innovationsprozess.1 Eine großzahlige empirische Studie ergab: „the greatest differences between winners and losers were found in the quality of execution of pre-development activities“.2
