Die neueste Welle von Unternehmenszusammenbrüchen ist ohne Beispiel. Allein im Jahr 2002 konnten in den USA 234 Unternehmensinsolvenzen und 178 Mrd. Dollar Kredit-und Anleiheausfälle verzeichnet werden. Diese einmalig hohe Anzahl und dieser nie da gewesene Betrag übersteigen den gerade ein Jahr zuvor erreichten Rekord von 220 Unternehmen und 112 Mrd. Dollar (Bos/Brady/Vazza, 2003). 2002 war außerdem der schlechteste Performance-Zeitraum für Investment-Grade-Kredite in gut über einem Jahrzehnt, da 16 Unternehmen innerhalb eines Jahres, in dem sie ein Investment-Grade-Rating erhalten hatten, Insolvenzantrag stellten (Hamilton/ Varma/).
