Eine finanzielle Sanierungssituation ist insbesondere durch kurzfristige, reaktive Kapitalmaßnahmen gekennzeichnet und knüpft unmittelbar an die insolvenzrechtlich relevanten Tatbestände der Überschuldung und Zahlungsunfähigkeit an. Im Gegensatz zu der strategischen oder der Erfolgskrise besteht hier de jure Handlungsbedarf. Sind Sanierungsfähigkeit und -würdigkeit gegeben, zielt die finanzielle Sanierung durch Neuordnung der Finanzierungsstrukturen auf die Wiederherstellung einer angemessenen Liquiditätslage bzw. auf die Beseitigung eines (drohenden) Überschuldungstatbestandes ab. Eine erfolgreiche finanzielle Sanierung ist dabei meist nur notwendige aber keine hinreichende Fortführungsbedingung, da die eigentlichen Auslöser der Unternehmenskrise regelmäßig im strategischen oder operativen Bereich liegen.
