In der wirtschafts-und sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur sind eine Reihe theoretischer Ansätze zur Erklärung der Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit von Unternehmen entwickelt worden. Die Ansätze lassen sich insbesondere der Organisationsforschung(Hannan, Freeman, 1977, 1984; Barnett, Woywode, 2004) und der industrieökonomischen Forschung (Jovanovic, 1982; Gort, Klepper, 1982; Fudenberg, Tirole, 1986;Horvath,Sachivardi,Woywode, 2001) zuordnen. Vertreter organisationstheoretischer Erklärungsansätze sehen in strukturellen Merkmalen von Organisationen, wie bspw. in deren Alter oder Größe, wichtige Determinanten für ihre Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit (Stinchcombe, 1965; Levinthal, 1991). Ein Teil der organisationstheoretischen Forschung betont auch das Ausmaß der Übereinstimmung (Fit) zwischen Merkmalen der Organisation und den „relevanten“ Umweltbedingungen als wichtige Einflussgröße auf die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit von Unternehmen (Hannan, Freeman, 1977, 1989; Carroll, Hannan, 1995). In einigen organisationstheoretischen Ansätzen, die häufig der Unternehmerforschung zugerechnet werden, wird auch auf die zentrale Bedeutung von Führungspersonen und Führungsteams für den Unternehmenserfolghingewiesen (Bates, 1990; Preisendörfer, Voss, 1990). Erklärungsansätze, die der Person des Unternehmers große Bedeutung für die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit von Unternehmen beimessen, stehen zumeist implizit oder explizit in einem inhaltlichen Zusammenhang mit der Humankapitaltheorie (Becker, 1993). Interessante Anwendungen des Humankapitalansatzes für die Erklärung der Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit von Unternehmen finden sich bei PREISENDÖRFER und VOSS (1990), BATES, 1985 1990) sowie BRÜDERL, PREISENDÖRFER und ZIEGLER (1992), 1995).
