Zusammenfassung
Unter Supply Chain Design wird ein strategischer, aggregierter Planungsprozess verstanden, im Rahmen dessen ganzheitlich die Infrastruktur der Supply Chain über alle Funktionen (Lieferanten, Produktionsstätten, Läger, Vertriebszentren, Transportmodi, Produktionsprozesse) sowie die sich daraus ergebenden Güterströme für mehrere Jahre ermittelt werden, um die Kundenbedarfe zu decken und eine effektive sowie effiziente Erreichung der Sachziele des Supply Chain Management sicherzustellen (Harrison, 2001, S. 413; Kohler, 2008, S. 13). Entgegen der in der Literatur vorherrschenden Ansicht, dass sich das Supply Chain Management auf die Wertschöpfungskette vom ersten Rohstofflieferant bis zum letzten Endkunden erstreckt, wird für die vorliegende Planungsaufgabe lediglich die interne Wertschöpfungskette einer einzigen Unternehmung sowie deren direkte Partner (Lieferanten und Kunden) in die Betrachtungen miteinbezogen. Dass dieser Planungsprozess aufgrund der zunehmend globalen Ausrichtung von Unternehmen Besonderheiten weltweit verteilter Wertschöpfungsaktivitäten berücksichtigen sollte, versteht sich von selbst. Im Detail ist eine Berücksichtigung folgender internationaler Aspekte bei der Gestaltung eines Wertschöpfungssystems angebracht:

Die Berücksichtigung landesspezifischer Faktorkosten und Faktorproduktivitäten mit entsprechenden Wirkungen auf die Produktions-und Beschaffungskosten.

Die Auswahl geeigneter Transportmodi unter Berücksichtigung von Kosten-und Durchlaufzeitaspekten.

Das Vorliegen von in der Höhe landesspezifisch stark abweichenden Gewinnsteuern, was auch Einfluss auf die Aufteilung einzelner Wertschöpfungsprozesse im Unternehmensnetzwerk haben sollte, da so über entsprechende Transferzahlungen die Gewinne der jeweiligen Tochtergesellschaften beeinflusst werden können.
