Abstract
Organizational research considers status traditionally as being determined through the hierarchical position. Behaviours which are motivated through aiming at status have been largely ignored. The paper introduces status behaviour as a construct for the description of organizational behaviours, and its distinctness to related constructs is discussed. The paper aims to show that status behaviour contributes to the explanation of organizational phenomena, such as the emergence of social, informal hierarchies and the assignment of persons to positions within the formal organizational hierarchy. A model is elaborated which introduces the degree of formalization of hierarchies, their instability (liminality), and their depth as moderator variables for the status behaviour-hierarchy relationship. Furthermore, through its impact on the hierarchy, status behaviour also influences the use of bases of power. Personal dispositions are introduced as antecedents of status behaviour. The paper concludes with a discussion of the empirical validation of the model and of major implications of status behaviours for other organizational phenomena.
