Product diversification strategy determines which businesses a corporation should be in. It defines the scope of the firm‘s activities, is the cornerstone of corporate strategy, and, according to prevailing theory, is of paramount relevance for performance (e.g., Hofer and Schendel, 1978; Markides and Williamson, 1994; Porter, 1987). Consequentially, few topics in corporate strategy research have attracted as much attention as the relationship between product diversification strategy and performance (Bowen and Wiersema, 2005; Chatterjee and Wernerfelt, 1991; Miller, 2004).
