Der klassische Anwendungsfall von transaktionalen Systemen ist das operationale Tagesgeschäft bzw. die Geschäftsprozesse in Unternehmen. Diese Aufgabe wird unter anderem von Warenwirtschaftssystemen (englisch Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP) wahrgenommen. Hier werden z.B. Personaldaten und Lagerbestände erfasst sowie Geschäftsvorgänge abgewickelt, z.B. Verkauf und Einkauf. Das Datenmodell, die Architektur sowie die Prozesse des OLTP-Systems müssen entsprechend dieser Aufgabe ausgerichtet sein. In den folgenden Abschnitten werden daher die Anforderungen detailliert vorgestellt und die resultierenden Eigenschaften des Systems aufgezeigt.
