Gegenstand der Wirtschaftsinformatik (WI) sind Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme (IKS) in Wirtschaft und öffentlicher Verwaltung. IKS umfassen menschliche und maschinelle Komponenten (Teilsysteme). Der Begriffsbestandteil „Information“ verdeutlicht, dass es wichtigster Zweck der Systeme ist, Aufgabenträger, seien es Menschen oder Maschinen, mit Informationen zu versorgen und das betriebliche Geschehen mithilfe von Informationen zu lenken. Das Wort „Kommunikation“ soll aussagen, dass Information kommuniziert werden muss, damit eine Koordination zwischen den Aufgabenträgern erfolgen kann.
