Auszug
Der Pfadabhängigkeitsansatz beruht auf der Idee einer Abhängigkeit der Trajektorien ökonomischer Systeme von vergangenen Entwicklungen und geht auf die Arbeiten von Arthur und David zurück. Er ist als Reaktion auf die Defizite universeller Postulate effizienter Märkte und jederzeit reversibler Entscheidungen des orthodoxen neoklassischen Paradigmas zu verstehen, indem fortan der Einfluss historischer Bedingungen und zunehmender Grenzerträge im Rahmen allokativer Prozesse untersucht wird. Obwohl ursprünglich für makroökonomische Fragestellungen entwickelt, wurde das Konzept pfadabhängiger Prozesse im Laufe der Zeit auch in den Disziplinen der Politikwissenschaft, der Geschichtswissenschaft, der Soziologie oder auch der Organisationsforschung aufgegriffen und dabei teilweise modifiziert. Die folgenden Ausführungen beschränken sich auf die ursprüngliche, marktbezogene Konzeption von technologischer Pfadabhängigkeit, wie sie vornehmlich in den Arbeiten von ARTHUR zum Ausdruck kommt.

Die Idee zunehmender Grenzerträge ist nicht neu. Arrow, 2000, weist darauf hin, dass die sog. „increasing returns“ in diversen ökonomischen Kontexten Gegenstand der Betrachtung gewesen sind, es bisher aber an einem gemeinsamen kohärenten Theorierahmen mangelt.
