Unternehmen versuchen, das Leistungsverhalten und die Motivation ihrer Mitarbeiter auf die Zielsetzungen der Institution auszurichten. Während angemessene Arbeitsbedingungen oder ausreichend Ressourcen lediglich notwendige Randbedingungen für Leistung sind, stellt die Motivation des Mitarbeiters einen wesentlichen Stellhebel im Leistungsprozess dar. Drumm bspw. bezeichnet Motivation als „Schlüsselvariable im Leistungsprozess“ und formuliert weiter: „Erst Motivation ermöglicht Leistungsverhalten und dieses Arbeitsleistungen der Mitarbeiter.“193 Leistungsmotivation spielt mit zunehmenden Entscheidungsfreiheiten und Selbstverantwortung am Arbeitsplatz eine immer bedeutendere Rolle und gilt daher als eine der zentralen Antriebsquellen von Menschen in Unternehmen.194
