Abstract

In the previous chapters, I analyzed patent filing strategies as well as the factors that bring industrial firms to implement such strategies. My major methods were patent data analysis and a large scale survey of inventors. In this final study I apply an additional method, namely case study research. I portray the German printing machines industry. This industry has seen drastic patent strategy changes of its incumbent firms over the last years. It therefore constitutes an excellent setting for a detailed analysis of triggers and effects of patent strategy changes.

This chapter is based on a joint working paper with Joachim Henkel (Jell and Henkel, 2010).
