Strategies and motives for filing patents
Regularly, managers, policymakers, and researchers use patent filings as indicators of innovative activity. In doing so, they risk to ignore that a firm's number of patent applications is a noisy measure which is at least equally dependent on the firm's patent filing strategy, as it is determined by inventive activity within the firm.
