Until fairly recently, the study of referees has not received much attention in the economic literature. Merely with the increasing exploitation of the commercial potential in professional sports, scholars have started increasing their awareness of the economic importance of referees. The main topic among the few existing studies on referees has been the question of whether referees have the tendency of being one-sidedly influenced by external social pressures. Several researchers conducted experimental and empirical studies to examine the incidence of a natural referee home bias in professional sports leagues.
