The study shows that existing balloon technology, as well as existing inflation systems technology, can be combined to create a robust inflatable drag body (referred to as “ballute”) that is able to withstand the mechanical and heating loads during atmospheric entry. It could also be shown that a high performance ballute may be used to achieve a certain scientific goal by reaching altitudes otherwise inaccessible (which is a new concept introduced with this thesis). It also shows that such a ballute spacecraft is technically possible.
