Mission and Spacecraft Design for Ballute Applications

Abstract

The peculiarity of ballute missions is that, more than on any other space mission, the design geometry and mass of the space vehicle are interdependent on mission design and vice versa. This is true even when compared to ordinary entry vehicles, because the deceleration altitude itself is of no concern, so long as no one gets hurt, and because relatively dense and small vehicles can tolerate a larger variation in the ballistic coefficient with comparatively little impact on the trajectory.
