Die Entwicklung einer Funktion in ihre Fourier-Reihe wird harmonische Analyse genannt. Die Funktion wird dabei als Überlagerung von sinusförmigen, Schwingungen dargestellt. Ist die Funktion ein Eingangssignal eines LTI-Systems, kann das Ausgangssignal relativ einfach berechnet werden, da das Signals als Überlagerung von Eigenfunktionen des Systems vorliegt.
