Soziale Netzwerke (social network sites; SNS) sind eine relativ neue Entwicklung, haben aber bereits Millionen von Nutzern in ihren Bann gezogen. MySpace hat mehr als 100 Millionen registrierte Nutzer und jede Woche fragen beinahe 2 Millionen neue Nutzer einen Facebook-Account an (Sobel, 2007). Soziale Netzwerke werden daher auch für Unternehmen interessant, auch wenn oft noch unklar ist, welches Geschäftsmodell in diesen Gemeinschaften angebracht ist (Rohn und Speth, 2007). In diesem Beitrag geht es darum, wie soziale Netzwerke für (Selbst)marketing genutzt werden. Betrachten die Mitglieder soziale Netzwerke als Chance zur strategischen Selbstdarstellung oder überwiegen Sorgen um die Privatsphäre? Welche Informationen können Unternehmen den Profilen entnehmen und wie könnten Marketingkampagnen 2.0 aussehen? Diese Fragen werden anhand mehrerer Studien in Hyves, dem größten niederländischen sozialen Netzwerk, beantwortet. Zunächst sollen jedoch soziale Netzwerke näher beschrieben werden.
