EKIAS — Success Criteria of PKI Implementations

Abstract

In the last months, FH Brandenburg and TeleTrusT have carried out the project called EKIAS to analyse success criteria of public key infrastructures and PKI implementations. The results are clear, and not surprising to experts. The top three insights are:
  • • sociological aspects have a higher influence than widely assumed,

  • • return on investment calculations are only effective if we also look at the targeted business processes and

  • • users will accept PKI applications only if well trained and supported during the ramp up phase.

The main recommendation for implementation projects is therefore as follows: to assure success focus on people and processes, the infrastructure itself must then follow.
