The zeta function and graph polynomials

  • Martin Loebl

Abstract

The theory of the Möbius function connects the principle of inclusion and exclusion (PIE) with another basic concept, namely the zeta function of a graph. In this section we discuss the theorem of Bass which will be useful in Chapter 9, and the MacMahon Master theorem, which will be useful in Chapter 8. Then we study graph polynomials, which constitute the basic connection between enumeration and the partition functions of statistical physics.
