Is it Possible to Conciliate “e-Learning”, “Learning By Doing” and “Cross Cultural” Approaches when Learning New Technologies?

ITIN is an IT Institution of Higher Learning, preparing students for different national Masters. ITIN is a professional institution equivalent to technological Universities or European polytechnic schools.

Among the main missions of ITIN [Virtanen I., 2002] [Wolfe D. 2002] one is to prepare excellent technical engineers, but also project managers capable of working efficiently within teams. In addition, it also means preparing up-andcoming engineers or even future business creators1. For this reason, ITIN uses an inductive pedagogy, a “learning by doing”, “project-based” approach.

Observing the economic globalization [Friedman Th., 2007] [Stiglitz J., 2003] as well as Information Systems globalization [Raivola R., 2001], we clearly see that it is vital to prepare our students for international and intercultural team work. For this reason, ITIN has developed a pedagogy based on virtual mobility also called e-learning.

In this article we will describe two series of distant teaching experiences, both project-based and with an intercultural context. We will describe the context, expose the problems related to 4 context sensitive parameters (distant learning, learning by doing, cross cultural, new technologies) and propose solutions for the exposed problems.

We will show two examples of distant teaching:
  • • Asynchronous distant teaching concerning “New technology Project Management“. This course is one of the EMIM modules. The participants are students of the EMIM2 partner Universities (GB, Austria, Estonia, Romania, Turkey, France). Exchanges are made using Moodle.

  • • Synchronous distant teaching for the creation of innovating European companies. In this seminar several international teams elaborate a Business Plan for a new company. We will deal with a 4-year France-Finland and France-Ukraine experience. All communications were made by videoconference (lessons, oral presentations, evaluation panels) and electronic media (e-mail, CMS).
