Säuren — z. B. Mineralsäuren, Carbonsäuren, viele Nichtmetalloxide und Nichtmetalle — sind Protonendonatoren; sie bilden durch Dissoziation in wässriger Lösung H+-Ionen (bzw. H3O+). Lewis-Säuren sind Elektronenakzeptoren (Elektrophile).
