Der Fahrzeugentwicklungsprozess hat sich aufgrund äußerer Einflüsse, des Wettbewerbsdruckes und der zeit- und kundennahen Produktplatzierung in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zunehmend verändert. Entwickelte man früher Fahrzeuge noch in einem Zeitraum von sieben bis neun Jahren, so wird heute die Entwicklungszeit auf drei bis vier Jahre reduziert. Dieses kennzeichnet einen Trend, der sich noch weiter fortsetzen wird, um markt- und kundenspezifischen Anforderungen gerecht werden zu können (Abbildung 9.1).
