Der Zerfall von Isotopen verschiedener Elemente bestimmt die Aktivität. Durch das Reaktor-Inferno in Fukushima haben seit Anfang April 2011 die Isotope der flüchtigen Elemente Iod (I), Cäsium (Cs) und Plutonium (Pu) einen dominierenden Platz in der medialen Berichterstattung eingenommen.
