Die genetische Variabilität bildet einen unentbehrlichen Baustein der Evolution. Sie hat als Ansatzpunkt der natürlichen Selektion eine enorme Artenvielfalt hervorgebracht und wartet mit wahren Superlativen auf: Etwa 46500 Wirbeltierarten, ca. 130000 Weichtierarten und über 1000000 Insektenarten sind bis heute beschrieben worden.
