Zusammenfassung
Das Nervensystem übertrifft in seiner Komplexität alle anderen Organsysteme der Insekten. Dabei dient es als oberste Instanz zur Regelung und Koordinierung der Funktionen des Organismus. Zur Realisierung dieser Aufgabe werden kontinuierlich Informationen aus der Umwelt und dem Körperinneren von sensorischen Systemen aufgenommen, in schnelle elektrische Signale übersetzt und im Nervensystem weitergeleitet. Dort werden sie unter Berücksichtigung geplanter Ziele und gesammelter Erfahrungen zu Kommandos verarbeitet, die an Muskeln und Drüsen übermittelt werden und deren Aktivität steuern und koordinieren. Das Nervensystem kann regulatorisch wirken, indem es einen gewünschten Zustand trotz Änderungen der Umwelt durch kompensatorische Aktivität erhält, oder völlig neue Zustände initiieren. Zusammen mit dem endokrinen System und der Muskulatur ist das Nervensystem die physiologische Grundlage des Verhaltens.
