Zusammenfassung
Die mit Infektionen verbundenen Erkrankungssymptome beruhen auf virusbedingten Schädigungen der infizierten Zellen und Gewebe. Man unterscheidet die direkte Zellzerstörung als Folge der Virusreplikation, wie man sie bei den Vertretern der Picornaviren (▸ Abschnitt 14.1) findet, von indirekten, meist immunpathologisch verursachten Schäden. Bei letzteren handelt es sich um schädigende Auswirkungen der Immunantwort, die vom Organismus eigentlich zur Eliminierung der Erreger entwickelt wurde (▸ Kapitel 7 und 8). So werden beispielsweise im Verlauf einer Hepatitis-B-Infektion die Leberzellen durch cytotoxische T-Zellen angegriffen und lysiert, das Immunsystem trägt also entscheidend selbst zur Entstehung der Symptome bei (▸ Abschnitt 19.1).
