In vielen Kapiteln dieses Buchs ist die Bedeutung von Peptiden, Proteinen, Zuckern oder Nucleotiden für funktionelle Abläufe in unserem Körper angesprochen worden. Mit niedermolekularen, von außerhalb zugeführten Arzneistoffen versucht man, im Krankheitsfall steuernd oder korrigierend in Vorgänge einzugreifen, an denen diese körpereigenen Stoffe beteiligt sind. Umgekehrt kann man natürlich die Frage stellen, ob nicht bei manchen Krankheitsgeschehen die exogene Zugabe der körpereigenen Biomoleküle selbst ein aussichtsreiches Therapiekonzept abgibt? Dies gilt besonders für Erkrankungen, bei denen einzelne dieser Stoffe vom Organismus nicht in ausreichenden Mengen bereitgestellt werden oder in einer Form produziert werden, die nicht funktionsfähig ist, z. B. aufgrund der Mutation einer Aminosäure. Erst die Methoden der Gentechnologie (Kapitel 12) haben die Perspektive eröffnet, Polypeptide und Proteine mit ganz bestimmten Eigenschaften gezielt und in ausreichenden Mengen herzustellen.
