Ingenieure und Schriftsteller haben viele Entwicklungen der Wissenschaft und Technologie vorausgeahnt. Leonardo da Vinci hat neben anderen raffinierten Maschinen das Prinzip des Hubschraubers beschrieben. Charles Babbage entwarf Anfang der zwanziger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts einen weit in die Zukunft weisenden Rechenautomaten. über 160 Jahre später wurde dieser mechanische Vorläufer eines programmierbaren Computers tatsächlich gebaut und er funktionierte! Jules Verne hat U-Bootfahrten und eine Reise zum Mond beschrieben und Hans Dominik die Gewinnung von Energie aus der Atomspaltung. Alle diese Visionen sind Wirklichkeit geworden.Von einer der bahnbrechendsten Entwicklungen unserer Zeit, der Gentechnik, ist nur eine einzige Anwendung vorbeschrieben, die Klonierung identischer Individuen in Aldous Huxleys „Schöne neue Welt“. Die Klonierung von Säugetieren ist bereits durchgeführt worden. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass Forscher ethische Grenzen respektieren und trotz einer greifbaren Machbarkeit von Huxleys Idee niemals davon Gebrauch machen werden.
