Zusammenfassung

Der Verschleiß der lumbalen Bandscheiben mit entsprechenden Wirbelsäulenleiden stellt eine der häufigsten orthopädischen und neurochirurgischen Diagnosen dar. Etwa 40% der Patientenklientel führt ein Bandscheibenleiden in orthopädische Arztpraxen. Dieses „Volksleiden“ bewirkt in Deutschland Arbeitsunfähigkeitstage in Höhe von zweistelligen Millionenbeträgen pro Jahr. Bei chronischem Rückenschmerzleiden lässt sich eine Wiedereingliederung in das berufliche Umfeld nach einem Jahr trotz intensiver konservativer Therapie jedoch in nur 43% der Fälle erzielen, was auf die sozioökonomische Bedeutung dieser Erkrankung hinweist.
