Zusammenfassung

Das Motiv des Doppelgängers lässt sich bis in die Antike zurückverfolgen. Es wurde aufgegriffen in der Mythologie (z.B. im Amphithryon-Mythos), im Aber- und Volksglauben (häufig in der Bedeutung der Todesabwehr oder des Todesboten; vgl. Arenz 2000) sowie in Literatur und Film — erwähnt sei hier der Roman von Richard Powers „Das Echo der Erinnerung“ (Powers 2007), der 2006 mit dem National Book Award ausgezeichnet wurde, und dessen Protagonist am Capgras-Syndrom litt. Die wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit dem Doppelgängermotiv begann im 19. Jahrhundert und kann mit dem seit der Romantik ständig steigenden Subjektivismus in Zusammenhang gebracht werden, der in der Moderne zu einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit dem menschlichen Individuum und dessen Spaltungs-möglichkeiten führte (Reber 1964).
