Treffen bei einem Verkehrsunfall zwei unterschiedliche Geschwindigkeitsmassen aufeinander, kommt es bei den beteiligten Personen u. U. zu einer impulsartigen mechanischen Belastung der Halswirbelsäule (HWS), deren Verletzungsfolgen allgemein mit Distorsions-, Schleuderoder Beschleunigungstrauma bezeichnet werden. Abgesehen von mechanischen Verletzungen der HWS können spontane oder zeitversetzte zentralnervöse Störungen wie Bewusstlosigkeit, Sehstörungen, Schwindel, Kopfschmerzen, Lähmungen, u.a. ohne makroskopisch erkennbares Verletzungsmuster auftreten. Hämodynamische Störungen, Änderungen des Spinalkanalvolumens und plötzliche Druckveränderungen im ZNS verursachen Nervenzellmembranschäden in den Spinalganglien, aber auch in der Hirn- bzw. Spinalhaut mit Verlust von zerebrospinaler Flüssigkeit (CSF). Der Verlust von CSF zeigt sich nuklearmedizinisch häufig im lumbosakralen oder unteren thorakalen Bereich.
