Eine HWS-Distorsion kann viele verschiedene Verletzungen zur Folge haben, die schwer zu objektivieren sind, z.B. kleine Wirbelbrüche, Läsionen von Bandscheiben, Ligamenta und Facettengelenkskapseln, Blutungen, Läsionen des zentralen und peripheren Nervensystems. Röntgenaufnahmen zeigen keine geringfügigen Brüche [10], daher werden Berichte über pathoanatomische Verletzungen unterbewertet [20]. Das Problem wird zusätzlich durch die Tatsache verschärft, dass potentiell ernsthafte Verletzungen anfänglich geringe Symptome zeigen können, während geringfügige Verletzungen später zu sehr ernsthaften Symptomen mit enormem Leidensdruck führen können [14, 18]. Daher ist es entscheidend, Verletzungen sichtbar zu machen.
