Abstract

A modular layered acetabular component (Alumina Bearing Surface, Kyocera, Japan) was developed in Japan for use in alumina ceramic on ceramic total hip arthroplasty. In 3933 components implanted between 1998 and 2000, 463 alumina liner fractures and dissociation (11.8 %) have been reported to the manufacturer until the end of 2006. The dissociation of the polyethylene liner from a metal shell gradually increased in recent years.
