Die Injektion von injizierbaren Implantaten dient zum einen der Gewebeaugmentation durch gezielte Injektion von Füllsubstanzen („Filler“), zum anderen der Biorevitalisierung der Haut durch Anregung der körpereigenen Elastin- und Kollagensynthese mittels flächiger punktueller Injektion geeignete Materialien. Die Anfänge der Gewebeaugmentation gehen bis vor 1900 zurück, als z. B. autologes Fett oder, einige Jahre später, Paraffin als Füllmaterial verwendet wurden [3, 27]. Nach der Einführung von tierischem und menschlichem Kollagen zu diesem Zweck (ab etwa 1970) [3] wurden zahlreiche weitere Substanzen erprobt, um neue Materialien für gute und reproduzierbare kosmetische Ergebnisse zu entwickeln. Ein optimales Füllmaterial sollte nicht toxisch, nicht karzinogen, nicht teratogen, nicht immunogen und nicht migrierend sein und allgemein ein Minimum unerwünschter Reaktionen wie etwa Injektionsschmerz, Erythem, Schwellung verursachen (Tabelle 8.1).
