Die arterielle Hypertonie gehört zu den häufigsten chronischen Erkrankungen und ist ein bedeutsamer kardiovaskulärer Risikofaktor. Ein erhöhter Blutdruck führt zu einem deutlichen Anstieg des Morbiditäts- und Mortalitätsrisikos insbesondere für zerebrovaskuläre Erkrankungen, koronare Herzkrankheit, chronische Herzinsuffizienz, Nierenerkrankungen und periphere arterielle Verschlusskrankheit.
