Die klinische Untersuchung beginnt mit einer Inspektion der mitgebrachten Sportschuhe auf asymmetrische Abnutzung. Hierdurch können bereits Rückschlüsse auf das Gangbild und den Laufstil gezogen werden. Bei einem supiniertem Laufstil oder einem Vorfußläufer werden die Laufschuhe besonders am Schuhaußenrand abgelaufen. Im Gegensatz dazu weist die Abnutzung des Schuhinnenrandes auf einen Pronierer hin. Zur Beurteilung des Fußes muss die gesamte untere Extremität entkleidet werden. Am stehenden Patienten schaut man zuerst auf auffällige Asymmetrien und abnormen Bodenkontakt des Fußes im Seitenvergleich.
