Die Plantarfasziitis ist eine der häufigsten Ursachen für den Fersenschmerz beim Läufer. Sie ist außerdem für 15% aller Schmerzsymptome am Fuß verantwortlich [17]. Der Ausdruck Plantarfasziitis selbst hat in der Vergangenheit Verwirrung gestiftet, da sich diese Erkrankung normalerweise als eine Ansammlung von klinischen Entitäten präsentiert und nicht als eigenständige Pathologie gesehen werden kann. Aus diesem Grund sollte man diese Kondition eher als ein Syndrom bezeichnen und es „plantares Fersenschmerzsyndrom — Plantar Heel Pain Syndrome“ — nennen.
