Minimal invasive Operationsverfahren stoßen bei Patient und Operateur in gleichem Maße auf eine subjektive große Akzeptanz und stoßen auf eine steigende Nachfrage, da schon das Wortgeflecht eine hohe Qualität des Eingriffs suggeriert. So haben in den letzten Jahren minimal invasive gewebeschonende Operationsverfahren, bedingt durch die guten Erfahrungen in der Wirbelsäulen- und Schulterchirurgie sowie der Hüftendoprothetik auch beim endoprothetischen Kniegelenkersatz Einzug gehalten. Beim unikompartimentalen Kniegelenkersatz zeigen die ersten Erfahrungen überzeugend, dass durch einen verkleinerten Gelenkzugang ohne Umschlagen der Kniescheibe sowie ein weichteilschonendes Vorgehen postoperativ ein schneller Funktionsgewinn und eine kurze Rehabilitationsdauer erreicht werden können (Goodfellow 1986; Repicci 1999). Die Frage ist ob sich diese Ergebnisse auch auf den bicondylären Oberflächenersatz des Kniegelenkes übertragen lassen, welcher bei fortgeschrittenem Knorpelschaden aller Kompartimente seine Anwendung findet.
