Die weithin wohl bekannteste Definition für „nachhaltige Entwicklung“ wird im Brundtland Report als „development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs“ formuliert. Diese relativ vage Formulierung lässt viel Spielraum für Interpretationen und Konkretisierungen; das entsprechende Schrifttum ist daher auch auÜerordentlich umfangreich. So zitiert Wieland in einem Überblicksaufsatz Quellen, die zum Thema „Nachhaltigkeit“ mehr als sechzig Definitionen gezählt haben.1
