Abstract
During the past ten years individual portfolio behaviour has fundamentally changed. The most remarkable effects are the dissemination of the stockholder base, the increase in mutual fund participation and the rising popularity of private pension funds (voluntary third pillar pension plans). Although the proportion of Swiss adults owning equities diminished by 24% since the year 2000, equity ownership has still doubled since 1995 (see Cocca and Volkart, 2002). On the liability side, there has been fast growth in credit card use and consumer indebtedness.
