Part of the Contributions to Economics book series (CE)

An observer of current trends may be left with the impression that the success of the winners is all what economics is about. However, Adam Smith, Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes and most other great economists were not concerned with the question of how some individuals or groups of individuals can get rich. On the contrary, the central purpose of economic reasoning has been to inquire into the determinants on which the earnings opportunities of the mass of people depend in an economic system. In this respect, two problems are of particular relevance: The rise in inequality during the last decades and the threat of unemployment or precarious employment. This study concentrates on the employment problem.
