This investigation has examined the role of national competition policy as a factor or dimension of a national economic policy to strengthen the international competitiveness of the nation. It has been assumed the existence of a modern and comprehensive national competition law, enforced by an independent, non-interventionist national antitrust authority that refrains from protectionist and discriminatory antitrust decisions. The advantages of such a national competition policy regime have been highlighted in distinction to international competition rules. Accordingly, the investigation is closely related to two current economic debates: the demands for an international harmonization of competition policy and the debate about a macroeconomic competitiveness of nations.
