Basic concepts

Part of the Contributions to Management Science book series (MANAGEMENT SC.)

The concept of logistics in its modern form dates back to the second half to the 20th century (Dehler 2001, p. 34; Weber/Kummer 1998, pp. 1–6). Since then, it has developed into a widely recognized discipline of significant importance to both theory and practice. As Wallenburg (2004, p. 38) points out, this development is not yet completed, however, and the debate on the true meaning of logistics and its exact specifications is still ongoing.
