Shock-capturing finite-volume and finite-difference schemes that have been described in the previous chapters require the use of a numerical flux function, which is necessary to define the flux across the cell edges. In the Godunov representation of the solution, in fact the function u(x, t n ) is piecewise smooth (in general, piecewise polynomial), with discontinuities at cell boundaries.
